Trucking Compliance Checklist
This checklist covers key aspects of regulatory compliance and safety in the trucking industry. Regularly reviewing and updating these elements will help ensure smooth operations and adherence to legal requirements.
- MC Number / Operating Authority:
Ensure you have obtained and displayed the Motor Carrier (MC) Number, which is the operating authority issued by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). It is necessary for interstate commerce.
- Unified Carrier Registration (UCR):
Stay current with UCR registration to comply with the federally mandated system that collects fees from motor carriers, brokers, and freight forwarders operating in interstate commerce.
2290 - Heavy Vehicle Use Tax:
- File Form 2290 to pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (HVUT)
if your vehicle has a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more. This tax is collected annually.
- Fuel Tax Agreement IFTA License and Decal:
Obtain an International Fuel Tax Agreement (IFTA) license and decals if your vehicles operate in multiple jurisdictions. IFTA simplifies the reporting and payment of fuel taxes.
- Apportioned Plates or Intrastate Decals:
Depending on your operations, ensure you have either apportioned plates for interstate travel or intrastate decals for vehicles that operate solely within a single state.
- Annual Inspection Copy for Truck and Trailer:
Keep a copy of the annual inspection report for both the truck and trailer. Regular inspections are crucial for safety compliance and help identify and rectify potential issues.
Insurance:
Maintain up-to-date insurance coverage, including liability and cargo insurance. Adequate insurance is essential to comply with legal requirements and protect your business and others in the event of an accident.
